This has some relevance as we will be officially releasing &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/imagecraft.com\/jumpstart-iot\">JumpStart IoT<\/a>&#8221; which includes REIXS, our preemptive multi-priority RTOS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>_______________________________________________________________________<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\nIf one examines the 2017 Embedded Market Study Survey: (<a href=\"https:\/\/m.eet.com\/media\/1246048\/2017-embedded-market-study.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/m.eet.com\/media\/1246048\/2017&#8230;rket-study.pdf<\/a>), the use of RTOS vs. no RTOS (page 54) has maintained a fairly consistent 70% (RTOS) to 30% (no RTOS) split for the last 5 years (and probably earlier as well). During the same time frame, the use of open source RTOS increased from 30% to 40%, while the use of commercial RTOS dropped from 40% to 30%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Digging a bit deeper, the most common reason selected for NOT using (a commercial) RTOS was \u201cthe current solution works fine\u201d (AKA inertia, a whopping 68% of the response), with the second most common reason selected being \u201ctoo expensive\u201d (coming in at 35%.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of the reasons to choose an RTOS, whether commercial or open source, the top 4 survey answers were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Availability of full source code (39%)<\/li><li>No royalties (30%)<\/li><li>Compatibility with other software and systems (27%)<\/li><li>Availability of tech support (27%)<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the most telling information is perhaps found in the following graphic:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/localhost\/imagecraft\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/image_48.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-640\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/localhost\/imagecraft\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/image.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-639\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A similar percentage of developers have been using RTOS in the last 5 years<\/li><li>The use of open source RTOS has increased somewhat, at the expense of commercial RTOS<\/li><li>The main selling points of open source RTOS are the availability of source code and no royalties<\/li><li>\u2026 and in the end, open source RTOS really just means embedded Linux and FreeRTOS<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>No wonder Amazon turned FreeRTOS into \u201cAmazon FreeRTOS\u201d for an undisclosed sum.In my following posts, I will be discussing the pros and cons of different RTOS, as well as describe ImageCraft\u2019s new RTOS REXIS (Real-time EXecutive for Intelligent Systems), which is a part of our JumpStart Embedded Suite.
